Early Detection saves lives, currently there are NO early detection screening test for ovarian cancer. The Pap test does not detect ovarian cancer; it screens for cervical cancer. Not only do researchers need to develop an early detection test for ovarian cancer, like mammograms for breast cancer and Pap tests for cervical cancer, women and medical professionals need to become better educated about ovarian cancer signs and symptoms, this we hope will reduce the number of woman diagnosed in the late stages and extend woman's lives.
CA 125 Blood Test
Early detection of ovarian cancers leads to a higher cure rate. Because there is not yet a highly effective screening test for ovarian cancer, and the symptoms of this cancer are variable, many women are diagnosed at a later, less treatable stage. Therefore, much effort is directed toward being able to screen for this cancer, or at least detect it at its earliest and most treatable stage. Woman who are suspected of having ovarian cancer and woman who have been diagnosed with ovarian cancer may receive a blood test to measure their CA 125 level.
